Most Popular Swiss Army Knives, and a Few that Should Be.
I've been a fan of "Swiss Army" knives (SAK)for decades. In years past, both Wenger and Victorinox were "official" Swiss Army knives. But with the merger, only Victorinox knives remain today.
Over the years, over one hundred different models have been offered. Today, there are dozens of different models in the Victorinox catalog. But how does one choose? Too many options can be worse than too few.
Any fan of these knives have their own favorites. I certainly do. But what I like or need may be very different than what someone else chooses. I reviewed a number of different sources and not surprisingly, none agreed as to the most popular. Even Victorinox itself seems to have contradicting sales records. What follows is my best consolidation of this data. But be warned, you too may become a SAKaholic.
1. Huntsman
Two of the most popular tools on these multi blade knives are the scissors and the wood saw. The Huntsman is the thinnest model that includes both of these tools.
2. Victorinox Children’s model
Also known as "My First Victorinox". It features the uncommon rounded tip main blade.
3. Camper
Long a staple and very popular model for the outdoors.
4. Climber
Another perennial favorite. Same as the Camper above, but it replaces the saw with scissors.
5. Pioneer Alox
Alox models replace the iconic red scales with more durable aluminum. This model is very similar to the actual model issued to Swiss military personnel until 2008.
6. SwissChamp
This is a fairly large, traditional style Swiss Army knife. It has a large selection of tools but remains a practical size to use.
7. Outrider
A newer style with a larger locking blade. Other tools include the popular wood saw, scissors, and the uncommon but very popular inline Phillips screwdriver.
8. SwissChamp XXL
An even wider model that is too big for a pocket and doesn't ride on a belt well either. It is more a hobbyist's collector piece. Popular to buy, but not used much.
9. Soldier’s Knife
10. Alox Farmer
Another aluminum handled model. Similar to the Pioneer with an added saw.
11. Classic
This is one of the smallest and least expensive models. Perfect keychain size and available with a very large selection of handle scales. Probably the most sold model when variations included.
