Ramana Maharshi - "Look for the One who is looking"

    1. “Your own Self-Realization is the greatest service you can render the world.”

    Know Thyself.

To thine own self be true and it must follow as the night the day thou canst not then be false to any man. -Shakespeare

    2. “Happiness is your nature. It is not wrong to desire it. What is wrong is seeking it outside when it is inside.”

I've been looking for happiness in all the wrong places.

I've been looking for happiness in too many faces.

    3. "Who am I? Not the body, because it is decaying; not the mind, because the brain will decay with the body; not the personality, nor the emotions, for these also will vanish with death."

What exists beyond time and space?

    What's eternal and everlasting?e

We're afraid because we have so identified with the body and its imminent death.

Have you ever seen a dead body? What's missing? Presence

    4. “You can only stop the flow of thoughts by refusing to have any interest in it.”

One of the worse things we can have is another thought.

    5. “Whatever is destined not to happen will not happen, try as you may. Whatever is destined to happen will happen, do what you may to prevent it. This is certain. The best course, therefore, is to remain silent.”

"What is - is" we don't get a vote in the matter. Haven't you noticed?

    6. "The question 'Who am I?' is not really meant to get an answer, the question 'Who am I?' is meant to dissolve the questioner."

Until we're willing to lose the "false self" we cannot know who we are.

    7. "Correcting oneself is correcting the whole world. The Sun is simply bright. It does not correct anyone. Because it shines, the whole world is full of light. Transforming yourself is a means of giving light to the whole world."

    It's called "self-inquiry" for a reason.

    8. "Why should you trouble yourself about the future? You do not even properly know about the present. Take care of the present, the future will take care of itself."

The present moment is where all the action takes place.

    9. "Your true nature is that of infinite spirit. The feeling of limitation is the work of the mind."

We cannot be unlike God created us to be. Perfect Oneness.

    10. "There is neither past nor future. There is only the present. Yesterday was the present to you when you experienced it, and tomorrow will be also the present when you experience it. "

"Therefore, experience takes place only in the present, and beyond experience, nothing exists."

    Experience is the only thing.

    11. "Peace is the inner nature of humankind. If you find it within yourself, you will then find it everywhere."

First, we take care of the inner and the outer will be a mirror image.

    12. "You are awareness. Awareness is another name for you. Since you are awareness there is no need to attain or cultivate it. All that you have to do is to give up being aware of other things, that is of the not-Self."

" If one gives up being aware of them then pure awareness alone remains, and that is the Self."

    13. "You should remain as a witness to whatever happens, adopting the attitude, 'Let whatever strange things that happens happen, let us see!' This should be one's practice. Nothing happens by accident in the divine scheme of things"

You are not reading this note by chance.

There are no accidents. The Universe is very intentional and precise.

Everything happening is what's supposed to be happening because it is.

    14. Your duty is to Be, and not to be this or that.

Give up trying to be anything in the world or not. The choice is yours.

You cannot be more than what you already are. However, it's possible for you to not know who you are.

    15. No one succeeds without effort... Those who succeed owe their success to perseverance.

Effort is nothing more than showing a little willingness to succeed.

    16. “Eventually, all that one has learnt will have to be forgotten.”

Everything we know we've learned. And most of what we've learned is untrue. Unlearning is the next phase.

    17. "He who thinks he is the doer is also the sufferer."

We think we're the ones doing but we're being done.

We think we're the ones thinking but we're being thought.

We're an idea in the mind of God.

    18. “If you go on working with the light available, you will meet your Master, as he himself will be seeking you.”

The only thing that I desire is to go on working with the light. I've tried working with the darkness and my life became even darker.

    19. "Have faith in God and in yourself; that will cure all. Hope for the best, expect the best, toil for the best and everything will come right for you in the end."

Is there a better alternative? If so, please share it with me.

    20. "You impose limits on your true nature of infinite being. Then you get displeased to be only a limited creature. Then you begin spiritual practices to transcend these non-existing limits."

"But if your practice itself implies the existence of these limits, how could they allow you to transcend them."

How can you transcend a lie?

All limits are self-imposed. God is limitless and there's a part of you that recognizes this Truth.

    21. "All unhappiness is due to the ego. With it comes all your trouble. If you would deny the ego and scorch it by ignoring it you would be free."

The ego is your personality or your persona. "Hello, my name is John and I'm the bank manager at Wells Fargo."

The ego is a collection of ideas, memories, past/future, beliefs, and thoughts.

The ego is a made-up sense of self, a made-up sense of importance.

The ego is the unloving part of the mind that tries to usurp God.

    22. "The master is within; meditation is meant to remove the ignorant idea that he is only outside. If he is a stranger whom you await, he is bound to disappear also."

"What is the use of a transient being like that? But so long as you think you are separate or that you are the body, an external master is also necessary and he will appear to have a body. When the wrong identification of oneself with the body ceases, the master will be found to be none other than the Self."

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Source is so benevolent that it will meet you wherever you think that you are.

    23. “The only useful purpose of the present birth is to turn within and realize the Self.”

What else would time and space be used for?

    • To acquire more things in the world?
    • To leave a legacy?
    • To pursue generational wealth?
    • To fall in love?
    • To attack?
    • To defend?
    • To suffer?
    • To be born, grow up, grow old, and die?

    24. “Mind your business. Take care of what you came here for. Find the ‘I’ first and you may afterwards speak of other matters.”

Seek ye first the Truth and everything you thought you wanted will be added unto you.

    25. “Everything in the world was my Guru.”

Guru (/ˈɡuːruː/ Sanskrit: गुरु, IAST: guru; Pali: garu) is a Sanskrit term for a "mentor, guide, expert, or master" of certain knowledge or field.
