I have a dog named Jack. He's a mutt and we don't know his age but he's probably around ten or eleven. He has the energy of a puppy so I think he's younger than that. He was rescued from a shelter by my friend John who lives in LA. John was going to put him down but then thought better of it and called me and asked if I wanted him. I said, "Sure!" And now he lives with me in NYC.
He has some quirks. Like, he doesn't like to go down stairs unless someone is holding his tail. If you try to let go of his tail (because you're afraid you'll fall) he will just stop moving and refuse to go any further until you grab his tail again. So, basically, when we are going downstairs together I have to hold onto his tail the entire time or else we will both fall down the stairs.
The other day I was walking him near my apartment building at 7am on a Sunday morning (we walk very early on Sunday because later in the day there are too many people). A homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk woke up as we were passing by and yelled out, "Hey! Does your dog bite?"
And then Jack licked my face about 100 times as soon as I put him back down on the ground after carrying him for about five steps away from this homeless guy who kept yelling back at us, "No! Really! Does your dog bite?"
One time my friend Dave came over for dinner with his girlfriend Erin (who is now his wife). Erin had never seen Jack before so she didn't know what to expect. We went downstairs and walked around for awhile until Jack decided it was time to pee on something (he usually pees right when we come home from walking so sometimes it's hard for me to predict). So I told Erin, "Hold onto his tail." She did but then he stopped walking so she couldn't let go because she would risk losing her balance if she did that so she ended up having her arm wrapped around his tail for about 10 minutes straight while he peed against a tree trunk.
Another time my friends Chris and Amy came over for dinner with their kids Lily and Louis who were about six or seven years old at the time. We went downstairs for awhile until finally Lily screamed out, "Daddy! Daddy! Uncle Gary is making me hold onto his DOG'S TAIL!!"
