Ten NHL teams that no longer exist
Thinking a bit about sports teams that aren't around any more. Have been an on-and-off fan of hockey since going to a Rangers game in the late 1960's.
We played floor hockey in a rec league for a few years, and our team was the Flames. Our shirt was the Atlanta version. And we played (mostly) without helmets - me until I took a puck to the eye socket.
Lost my beautiful visage that day, LOL!
1. Quebec Nordiques (1979-1995)
Relocated to Colorado and became the Avalanche
2. Hartford Whalers (1979-1997)
Relocated to North Carolina and became the Hurricanes
3. Winnipeg Jets (1979-1996)
Relocated to Phoenix and became the Coyotes (Note: A new Winnipeg Jets team was established in 2011)
4. Minnesota North Stars (1967-1993)
Relocated to Dallas and became the Stars
5. Atlanta Thrashers (1999-2011)
Relocated to Winnipeg and became the new Jets
6. California Golden Seals (1967-1976)
Relocated to Cleveland and became the Barons
7. Cleveland Barons (1976-1978)
Merged with the Minnesota North Stars
8. Kansas City Scouts (1974-1976)
Relocated to Colorado and became the Rockies, later moved to New Jersey as the Devils
9. Atlanta Flames (1972-1980)
Relocated to Calgary and became the Flames
10. Montreal Maroons (1924-1938)
Ceased operations due to financial difficulties during the Great Depression
These teams have all either relocated, merged with other teams, or ceased operations entirely, leaving their original identities behind in NHL history.
