Ten Popular Styles of Pizza
Because I heard a radio news story about Detroit pizza, wondered about what styles are out there. And, now I'm hungry...
1. Neapolitan Pizza
Originating from Naples, Italy, this classic pizza has a thin, soft, and slightly chewy crust with a puffy edge. It's traditionally topped with simple ingredients like fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil.
2. New York-Style Pizza
Famous for its large, foldable slices and thin, crispy crust. Often sold by the slice, it's typically topped with mozzarella and tomato sauce but can accommodate a variety of toppings.
3. Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza
Known for its thick, buttery crust that lines a deep dish pan, this pizza is loaded with layers of cheese, toppings, and chunky tomato sauce on top. It's more pie-like in structure.
4. Sicilian Pizza
Typically rectangular with a thick, airy crust. The base is soft and chewy, often topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, and sometimes anchovies or onions.
5. Detroit-Style Pizza
Rectangular with a thick, chewy, and crispy crust, this pizza has caramelized edges due to the cheese that melts along the sides of the pan. It's traditionally topped with tomato sauce placed over the cheese and toppings.
6. St. Louis-Style Pizza
Characterized by its thin, cracker-like crust made without yeast. It uses Provel cheese, a processed blend of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone, and is often cut into squares.
7. California-Style Pizza
This pizza features a thin crust and gourmet, often unconventional toppings like fresh vegetables, avocado, or smoked salmon, often inspired by the farm-to-table movement.
8. Greek Pizza
Known for its puffy, oily crust baked in a shallow pan, this style is topped with thick tomato sauce, heavy cheese, and often includes traditional Greek ingredients like olives, feta, or oregano.
9. Roman Pizza (Pizza al Taglio)
Baked in long, rectangular pans and sold by weight, this pizza has a crispy, thin base and is topped with a variety of ingredients, from simple marinara to gourmet toppings.
10. Flatbread Pizza
A thinner, crispier alternative to traditional pizzas, often topped with light ingredients. Flatbread pizzas can include artisanal toppings like goat cheese, arugula, or balsamic drizzle.
