Ten Signs You’re Managing the System Instead of Solving the Problem

    1. You have a tracker for the tracker

The original issue is still there, but now it has columns, colors, and weekly updates. Which no one reads much less acts on.

    2. Everyone knows the workaround better than the process

The official method exists. Nobody uses it unless someone important is watching. And only if that person has any awareness of that system.

    3. The same problem has a different name every quarter

First it was communication. Then accountability. Then workflow. Then alignment. It is still the same mess with a shiny new moniker.

    4. Meetings are used to prove activity

Nobody leaves with a decision, but everyone leaves with the feeling that something was “covered.”

    5. The fix requires one specific person

If the system only works because Linda remembers how to do it, you do not have a system. You have Linda.

    6. Exceptions are treated as normal

Every case is “unique,” which somehow means no rule ever has to work. And anyone who wants their own rule gets their own rule.

    7. You keep improving reporting instead of improving results

The dashboard gets cleaner while the underlying problem keeps leaking through the floor.

    8. People are praised for heroic cleanup

The person who saves the day gets celebrated, while nobody asks why the day needed saving again. And the person waving the red flag might as well be invisible.

    9. The process protects itself from feedback

Anyone who questions it is told, “That’s just how we do it.” The word "do" gets stretched to its breaking point here.

    10. The problem disappears only when someone ignores the system

This is a major giveaway. The solution exists, but the official process is in the way.
