Ten Things Teenagers Think About Adulthood That Are Patently False
When I was a teenager, I could not imagine being the age that I am now (55).
1. Your parents are “really old”
50 is actually the new 20!
2. Your parents can’t understand what you are going through
We were all there…
3. You have to have everything figured out before you graduate high school
Very few people do this. I am still figuring things out!
4. You have freedom
As they say, freedom isn't free. A typical adult has more responsibilities than a typical teenager.
5. You don't have freedom
With a free mindset, there are very few limitations for an adult, as long as you are not harming someone else. When I was in middle school my mother found an algebra tutor for me that was homeless by choice. He was not a drug addict, he just made a lifestyle decision to live in the woods and hang out at the library and YMCA. He could support himself with just a few odd jobs. Another guy "retired" in his early 60s, sold all his stuff and moved to Vietnam (from the US) and lived out of a backpack.
6. "Adult" is a static state
While there is a legal definition of an adult, your life will continuously change. In the same way you were an elementary school student, middle school student and high school student, you'll be a young adult, a middle-aged adult, an older adult, and possibly a very old adult. Each of these life phases is quite different from the others.
7. Adults have all the answers
Ask an honest one...
8. Adults don't know anything
Most of use have been around the block
9. Adults are done with school
While some people may be glad to stop, most adults find fulfillment in learning new things throughout their lives.
10. Adults feel old
Whatever age I am feels like the "right age," and everyone 10 years older than me is "old," and everyone 10 years younger than me is "young." As long as you take decent care of yourself and move every day, you are likely to feel good.
