Ten Tiny Standards That Matter More Than Big Goals
Gotta try #5. The others I'm using to greater or lesser extents.
1. Put things back where they belong
A big goal says “get organized.” A tiny standard says “the keys go here.”
2. Leave yourself a usable morning
You do not need to redesign your life. Just stop letting last night sabotage tomorrow.
3. Answer the thing before it becomes a thing
The email, text, form, bill, or awkward question rarely improves by aging.
4. Make the next step visible
Big goals are inspiring. Visible next steps are how anything actually moves.
5. Keep one promise to yourself every day
Not ten. One. Tiny consistency beats dramatic self-renewal speeches.
6. Stop when the job is actually done
Done means put away, wiped down, sent, filed, closed, or reset — not abandoned at 87%.
7. Choose the boring fix first
Sleep, water, walking, writing it down, leaving earlier. Annoyingly basic advice keeps surviving for a reason.
8. Do not let small messes become background scenery
Once you stop seeing the pile, the pile has won.
9. Protect a little empty space
A full calendar, full counter, full inbox, and full brain all create the same problem.
10. Make future you slightly less annoyed
That may be the most practical standard of all. Not perfect. Just less hostile to the person who has to live here tomorrow.
