Ten Unspoken Parking Lot Rules
As a football official, sometimes we don't get reserved spots and have to "fight" for a spot in a school lot, or park in the street. Some unspoken / unwritten rules...
1. First come, first served
Whoever is first / closest to the person pulling out gets the spot.
2. Leave room for the cars on each side to be able to get in their car
Even if it takes two or three adjustments...
3. Return your cart
And, especially important, don't leave it around the other cars.
4. No place holding
Can't sit in the spot to "save" it for someone else.
5. New cars can "only" be parked in the back, away from the others
To avoid dings and dents.
6. If there are three open spots in a row, park in the center spot
Common courtesy
7. Backing in to a spot is verboten
Us officials do this, so we can get out of a parking space / lot before the angry parents. But apparently some folks think this is a problem.
8. Wave Off When Staying
If you're just putting bags in your car and a car is following you to get your spot when you leave, wave them off so they know you're not leaving.
9. Who Goes First?
Two cars backing out of spots from opposite sides. The person with the older car, and/or better insurance, gets to pull out first.
10. Between the lines
Even if you have a very, very expensive car, you must park between the lines and not in two, or four, spaces. You bought that car, you can take the risks.
