Ten US Retailers From the 1960s That Are No More
A bit nostalgic today... vivid childhood memories walking through 1,2,3,7& 9. Can see the Matchbox / toy car area in my head (before Hot Wheels).
1. W.T. Grant (Grant’s)
A nationwide discount department store chain that collapsed in 1976 after aggressive expansion and credit losses.
2. E.J. Korvette
One of the original membership discount retailers; once hugely influential but bankrupt by 1980.
3. F.W. Woolworth
The classic five-and-dime store famous for its lunch counters. U.S. stores closed in 1997.
4. Gimbels
A major department store chain and longtime rival to Macy’s, remembered for the slogan “Nobody beats Gimbels.” Closed in 1987.
5. Bonwit Teller
A luxury department store known for high fashion and its Fifth Avenue flagship. Closed in 1990.
6. Alexander’s
A New York–area discount department store chain that disappeared in 1992.
7. Two Guys (Two Guys from Harrison)
A massive discount retailer based in New Jersey that went bankrupt in 1982.
8. S.S. Kresge
A five-and-dime chain that eventually evolved into Kmart; the Kresge name itself disappeared.
9. Food Fair
A major supermarket chain across the Northeast and Florida that went bankrupt in the 1970s.
10. Ames Department Stores
A popular discount chain across the Northeast that ultimately closed in 2002.
