Ten Ways to Make Your House Feel Cooler Without Touching the Thermostat

    1. Close blinds on the sunny side of the house

Sunlight pouring through windows can heat a room fast. Block it before the room warms up.

    2. Use fans to move air, not just blow air

Aim one fan to pull cooler air in and another to push warm air out, especially in the evening.

    3. Switch ceiling fans to summer mode

Make sure they spin counterclockwise so air pushes downward and creates a cooling effect.

    4. Open windows strategically

Open them early in the morning or later at night, then close them before the day heats up.

    5. Avoid using the oven

Use the grill, microwave, air fryer, slow cooker, or cold meals when possible.

    6. Turn off unused lights

Older bulbs especially can add heat. Even small heat sources matter on a hot day.

    7. Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans

Pull hot, humid air out after showers or cooking.

    8. Keep interior doors open

Let air circulate through the house instead of trapping warm air in certain rooms.

    9. Use lighter bedding and fabrics

Swap heavy blankets, dark curtains, and thick throws for lighter, breathable materials.

    10. Create a “cool room” habit

Pick the coolest room in the house and make it comfortable for reading, watching TV, or relaxing during the hottest part of the day.
