The Best Horror Movies Ever, According to Me (it's the DEFINITIVE List)

    1. Psycho. The original Alfred Hitchcock version.

This one was more of a psychological thriller. It didn't need to show a lot of blood to scare the bejeebers out of us. And that soundtrack. Chef's kiss....MUAH!

    2. A Nightmare on Elm Street

This was a new idea. A killer who could follow us into our sleep. There's no way to get away. One, two, Freddie's coming for you. Imaginative and done well on a shoestring budget.

    3. John Carpenter's The Thing

This one haunted my dreams for a few weeks when I saw it as a 5th grader! The suspense, not knowing who was the baddie, and the overall sense of claustrophobia in this Antarctica station gave this a beautifully creepy feeling.

    4. Friday the 13th Part 2.

Yes, for me it's part two. That's when we were introduced to the unstoppable killer Jason. This is jump scare goodness at its best. It hits all of the major cliches, and they're guilty pleasures.

    5. Scream.

This turned the horror genre on its head, poking fun at all of the cliches I just mentioned. It also made some history by killing off the main character in the first few minutes of the movie.

    6. John Carpenter's Halloween.

This was made in 1978 with a $300,000 budget and went on to make $70M initially at the box office, and there were plenty of reasons why.

The mask. The music. The casting. The rich back story. The holiday. Yes.

    7. Alien.

In space, no one can hear you scream. Sci-fi horror. This was suspense. This was well done. And it stuck with you a long time after it finished.

    8. Get Out.

A newer movie on the list. It got here due to great writing, an inventive story, and a great mystery about what is happening to the family. Not as scary, but deeply satisying.

    9. When a Stranger Calls

This is relatively unknown. But the story is very unsettling. It's about a killer who calls the babysitter from inside the house. I tell it at ghost story time around the campfire and it always scares everyone.

    10. The Exorcist.

Of course, this is on the list. It crosses the line of religion, demons, and the supernatural, and it puts that evil into a child. It's iconic for a reason. I'd make this #1 on the best horror movies of all time.
