1. Paramount optioned the project from Mario Puzo, who only completed 60 pages of what would be a 455-page book.

And Puzo was only writing it to pay off a gambling debt.

2. While Hollywood was at its peak from the 1930s to the 1950s, viewership was tanking in the 1960s.

In fact, 1969 and 1970 saw the lowest attendance on record.

3. Italian-American rights groups tried blocking The Godfather over its portrayal of Italians.

One of the leading activists was Anthony Colombo (his father was the head of one of The Five Families) who successfully had the word "mafia" taken out of the script.
