Things I’ve learned this week

    1. That I don’t need all of the books on my shelves

    0

Looking through my overgrown book collection, I’ve come to realise that time is finite and due to recently becoming a father, I simply don’t have the free time that I used to have . Books that I wanted to read years ago I’m no longer drawn to. My collection needs to become all killer no filler.

    2. Sui Generis

    1

    Latin term meaning ‘unique’.

    3. Ex Nihilo

    0

Another Latin term meaning ‘from nothing’. How I’ll fit these terms into conversation I have no idea. Don’t want to sound like a show-off.

    4. When it comes to exercise, stick to the foundations and go back to basics

    0

When time and energy are scarce, go back to basics, work hard at the boring stuff and make progress on foundational exercises.

    5. That often things aren’t as bad as we expect them to be

    0

A few times this week I’ve been anxious about certain meetings at work, fearing ridicule, derision and societal ostracisation. However none of these happened, everyone was pleasant and the earth continued to spin afterwards.

    6. Kant's Categorical Imperative

    0

Moral thought experiment that postulates that every decision or action you take could be applied wholesale to the entire human population, and if that doesn’t benefit society then it shouldn’t be committed by the individual.

A fun way of trimming (or refilling) your pile of books is https://www.bookcrossing.com/. I only do it very casually, but it is fun.

Congrats on becoming a dad! Another Latin phrase, which I'm living now, Tempus Fugit - Time Flies. My little boy suddenly is now 18, and graduates high school in two weeks.
