📚3 things that make you learn faster - I bet you didn’t know them.
These are by far the most effective, the most foundational, the simplest ways to enhance your learning. Based on the way our brain is wired to remember and retain the information we consume consciously (with dedicated learning) or unconsciously (learning through experience).
1. STRESS AFTER LEARNING
You got to elevate your stress hormones right after learning bout.
On one of the video podcasts I did the host suggested getting punched after, as a way to enhance learning - not what I recommend but perhaps doing a few cycles of hyperventilation breathing (I demonstrate here) or doing a few burpees, or taking a cold shower will do just fine!
It has to do with the fact that when we experienced stress in the past it probably meant that something important, that could potentially endanger our survival happened just prior to that. And so the brain “records” everything that happens before the stress initiation, so the next time you take action to prevent that stress VS “falling into the same trap”.
2. NOVELTY BEFORE LEARNING
New studies showed that when we change the environment where we learn (like changing rooms), or we do something novel like trying a new dance move, or we simply go for a walk using a different route - what we learn after gets wired in more effectively. It has to do with dopamine activation: novelty activates dopamine circuits and dopamine makes us learn better. Read the study here.
3. NAPS AND SLEEP ARE ESSENTIAL
Some people still think that pulling an all-nighter does any good to skill acquisition.
Not a chance!
ALL studies show that the more sleep and napping you get after the learning bout, the more solid that information becomes in our minds, the better we are able to recall it, the longer it stays with us. Even slight sleep deprivation after learning will lead to worse retention and skill acquisition.
