What are the ten most important things about personal finance that someone without a finance background must know?

    1. Abundance will never come from a job

A salary is what they pay you for your unhappiness.

    2. Debt eats equity

In America, debt is a way of life. Americans use debt to buy homes ($9.86 trillion), educations ($1.75 trillion), and cars ($1.36 trillion). Americans use credit cards for every day expenses ($4.2 trillion). An estimated 8 out of 10 Americans owes money. Be one of the odd balls that doesn't!

    3. Compound interest is extremely powerful

In short, compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world, and is extremely powerful, because the numbers never lie, and because it’s hard to compete with numbers, especially at scale.

    4. Making more money > Saving more money

Both strategies are vital....making more money is a superior strategy.

    5. Diversification = Can save your bacon

Don't put all of your dollars in one investment category. Learn about hedging your risks, how equities work, how fixed income works, how derivatives work, how different investments are correlated.

    6. Spend less than you earn

Being thrifty is one of the most powerful life skills anyone can develop. It doesn't mean you live a life of deprivation. It just means living a responsible life.

    7. Making money, keeping money, and growing money are three different skills

    8. Choose the people you spend your time with wisely

The person you marry is very important in many ways more than just love. The business partners, employees, etc that you spend time with will influence you and your life. Choose to associate yourself with honest, ethical people who are committed to growing (not just financially, but physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually).
