What books changed how you think?
As you get older I think you are less likely to change how you think. So my bet is on the books I read when I was growing up and would read again.
1. The City and the Stars -Arthur C Clarke
I loved Sci Fi growing up and this is one of my favorites - I think Logans run might have drawn some ideas from here but this is much better.2. The Foundation Trilogy - Isaac Azimov
Another must read for Sci Fi fans after you read this you will believe psychohistory is real. Yes I know it is more than a trilogy now but it was not when I first read it.3. I-Robot books all 7 of them - Isaac Azimov
With AI increasingly worrisome we need to take note of his "laws of robotics" and all the ways they were evaded with unexpected consequences in his stories: I would buy these as a teenager and then my favorite aunt would read them after and we would chat about them.
Asimov's laws of robotics are not scientific laws, they are instructions built in to every robot in his stories to prevent them malfunctioning in a way that could be dangerous. The first law is that a robot shall not harm a human, or by inaction allow a human to come to harm. The second law is that a robot shall obey any instruction given to it by a human, and the third law is that a robot shall avoid actions or situations that could cause it to come to harm itself. Where these laws conflict, precedence is given to the first law, then the second law, with the robot's self-preservation taking last place. For example if a human ordered a robot to attack another human it would refuse to follow the order (first law takes precedence over second), but if a human ordered it to disassemble itself it would obey (second law takes precedence over third). I grew up in the UK and they focused too much on the boring stuff in primary schools like a tiny slice of history like the industrial revolution but ignoring the Romans and Greeks etc. Finding out I could get books on my own and read about moon shots, science and geology that were just not being taught allowed me to supplement my education with the more exciting stuff than an old loom, and a bunch of luddites!5. 1984 - George Orwell
Its happening now what more can I say, a bit of boring book other than the fact that he saw it coming.6. The Art of War - Sun Tzu
See Idea #5 and apply this book to what is happening now and you will understand that this is the playbook that is being implemented against the west for over 20 years.7. Think and Grow Rich - Napoleon Hill
This is one of a number of books written around the same time that reinforces the abundance of everything in the world we live in, and even more how we just take it in stride.8. The Bible
Christianity has been very successful and the moral code espoused in the bible is the foundation of the world as I know it. Whether or not you are a Christian or even religious you have to have observed the expansion and relative wealth of civilizations with a Christian legal and societal framework.9. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne
Can I include this if I never read it but saw the video? Probably not but here it is anyway influential if you want to understand abundance.10. Trade like Chuck by Chuck Hughes
I do a lot more options trading after reading this book so I guess you can teach an old guy new tricks.
