What books you gift to your 10 year old?
I have a 10 and a 12 year-old, so I qualify to answer.
1. Whatever book they will read.
I can''t understate this enough: I'm an avid reader. There are books all over my house. But I wasn't always an avid reader; there were phases during my youth when I was more interested in other things.
More importantly, my kids don't want to read all of the books that I read when I was younger or that I suggest now.
Forcing them to read something specific should be far less important than getting them to read.
2. Way Of The Warrior Kid by Jocko Willink
3. Astrophysics For Young People In A Hurry by Neil Degrasse Tyson
4. The One And Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and Patricia Castelao
5. Smile by Raina Telgemeier
6. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
7. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
8. Walk around a physical bookstore & explore
Tangential to #1, but not the same: take your kid to the store and get out of their way!
I recently browsed the YA areas and they really are full of interesting choices.
9. A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle
10. Animal Farm by George Orwell
11. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
12. The Odyssey by Homer
They have abridged versions.
