What Drew Me To Triathlon

What Drew Me To Triathlon
Preview

    1. Endurance

I had completed my first marathon, and I loved pushing the envelope on how far I could go. Triathlon is defined as an endurance sport.

    2. Variety

I found running every single day to be monotonous, so I incorporated a lot of cross-training into my marathon training schedule. I'm not sure if this led to an optimal finish time, but at least I didn't get injured or go insane.

    3. Environment

By swimming you're moving through the water. While both running and biking take place on land, the differences in speed make you experience the movement differently. If human-powered flight were (safely) attainable, I'd wish for that to be added to the sport (quadrathlon?), so that it could be sea, land and air, but biking is the next best thing.

    4. Skill (Part 1)

There is technique to running, but it's a very intuitive movement so few individuals spend much time on it. Bike handling, knowing which gear to use when, and swim technique all play a role in your performance and complement your endurance and fitness.

    5. Skill (Part 2)

Transition is its own set of skills; the time spent getting out of the water and onto your bike as well as the time spent switching from bike to running counts toward your total race time. If you're clever, you'll set yourself up for efficiency.

    6. Mental Toughness

Triathlon is not just a test of physical endurance but also mental toughness. It challenges you to keep pushing yourself even when your body is screaming at you to stop. This mental strength is a valuable asset that can be applied to other areas of life as well.

    7. Sense of Community

Triathlon is not just an individual sport, but it also has a strong sense of community. You meet like-minded people who are passionate about the sport, and you get to share your experiences and learn from each other.

    8. Adventure

Triathlon takes you to new places and challenges you to explore the world around you. Whether it's a local race or an international competition, every triathlon is an adventure that takes you out of your comfort zone.

    9. Goal Setting

Triathlon is an excellent way to set and achieve goals. Whether it's completing your first race, improving your time, or qualifying for a major event, triathlon provides a tangible goal that can motivate you to push yourself further.

    10. Health and Fitness

Triathlon is a great way to stay healthy and fit. The combination of swimming, biking, and running provides a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular health, builds strength, and burns calories. It's a fun and effective way to stay in shape.
