What I learned from my first stand up

I performed on Zoom this morning with a few comedians in China.

    1. Slow down

My jokes require thinking. It's OK if they don't immediately get it. Slow down and give them time to process what was said.

    2. Restate the Punchline

My son was wailing the other day. Waaa... Waaa... Waaa... Tears and snot everywhere. I just looked at him, disappointed. Shook my head and said 'what did you expect you just shot it with a harpoon?'

    Whaling

    3. Accent

I forgot how rough my accent is at times. Maybe I should put on a voice when performing.

    4. Dare

The jokes that hit best where the ones that 'shouldn't' have been said. I white guy said the N word, cute girls talked about disgusting sex acts, protests where mentioned in China. The shock itself is funny.

    5. Set

I enjoyed the sets that had a single narrative weaved through all the jokes. Could I write a story that houses some of my favourites?

    6. Look

If you look off people will be obsessing over you before you say a word. Maybe you can use your look to throw people off your style of comedy, making the shock value even more.
