Your Bad Idea List Making Habits

There are definitely a few things I'm aware I need to be better about when it comes to list-making. Plus, I'm sure there are other ways I could be better that I'm not aware of.

RE the former-- hopefully this list will force me to identify things I can improve on, so that I can target what to do better

RE the latter-- I'm curious to read what others have to say and see whether any of it applies to me as well.

    1. Rushing

    0

Sometimes I write lists too quickly for the sole purpose of getting them done. This isn't ideal because my idea quality is lower.

    2. Trying to complete a list in one sitting

    0

This isn't always a problem, but, for some more challenging topics, I typically need a bit of time to reflect and can't be an idea machine on demand.

    3. Over-crowdsourcing

    0

From time to time I'll ask a friend or loved one for inspiration, and they'll end up rattling off quite a few things. It's great that they're so engaged, but, for me, a main goal of writing idea lists is to think up the ideas myself

    4. Writing in stream of consciousness and not having a framework for my thinking

    0

Sometimes this is fine, but other times I'd do well to lay out how I want to approach a problem/challenge before just writing away.

    5. Writing lists on dull topics because I'm too lazy to think up more meaningful ones

Again, I think this is fine every once in a while, but I want to avoid it becoming a habit.

I like this kind of analysis. For me, the worst habit is probably forcing a list for a topic that just isn't clicking for me at that moment. I'm slowly getting better at leaving those idea lists as drafts and starting over with something completely new. But, this is hard to do on days when I'm short on time and just need to complete a list. That said, every once in awhile I revisit lists in draft, start working on one of them again, and up end completing it with some great ideas.

Yeah, I also have the experience of revisiting drafts from time to time, and I agree with you that it makes for more success!
