10 Adages that I find to be *so* true
I love a good adage. Of course, for just about every adage, there's an equal and opposite counter-adage. It's Newton's third law of motion applied to conventional wisdom.
1. "A stitch in time saves nine"
2. "This too shall pass"
3. "Be yourself"
Plus, "being" yourself implies knowing yourself. I think knowing ourselves is a lifelong, ever-twisting journey, but the more we experience and the more we pay attention, the more self-aware we become. This brings confidence and peace.
4. "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with"
This reminds me that 1) my time is valuable and 2) my surroundings are so important
5. The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing
This one is from Socrates. Being half Greek, I'm predisposed to liking him. Nevertheless, the more I read about him, the more I recognize the importance of studying philosophy and the classics. So much has been said and thought through already, and we can draw on the lessons of the past to guide our actions and decisions today.
6. "The truth is not always beautiful"
7. "Well done is better than well said"
8. "Don't put the cart before the horse"
9. "A camel is a horse designed by a committee"
10. "You can't have your cake and eat it too"
But I've learned two things since going to college, where I had to specialize in a field of study: 1) when one door closes, another one opens; and 2) failing, or making a poor choice, is inevitable. What's key is to get back up and try something new, try again, or change the end goal.
