10 Things I Really Miss About The Good Old Days

I turned 65 last week, so I have known some "Good Old Days" and certainly miss some things. Taking this challenge. We could also list things we DON'T MISS about the good old days, like cigarette smoke in public places, dial up modems, etc. For another day.

    1. $5 Craps

Just back from Las Vegas where I learned to shoot craps 40 years ago on 25 cent and $1 limit tables. Continued into to my 40's and 50's where limits were $5, but I still played with multiple chips on the line as I took my odds and bet the come, sometimes playing for hours. One time in Tahoe I even rolled 7 SEVENS coming out while the table kept doubling down. It was a beautiful thing and will never happen again. Limits at the crap tables this trip (in the middle of the day I might add) were $25! Just takes the fun out of it to me. I did not roll the dice. Over it. Spent my money at the Four Seasons spa instead and placed my bets for future PGA Majors in the sportsbook.

    2. Ringing the bell while driving up to a service station for gas

I really miss service stations with attendants eagerly available to top off my gas tank, check my tires and under the hood. Heck, they even used to clean my windshield and all for 25 or 30 cents a gallon. What a luxury!

    3. Ben and Jerry's Froyo

My grocery store no longer carries it and I haven't been able to locate any. High in protein and great for a late snack if you are counting macros.

    4. Guns in a pickup truck gun rack parked in the high school parking lot...

...and NO ONE EVER GOT SHOT. Seems to me we have more of a social/mental problem, than a gun problem. Lack of moral fiber in communities. Lack of strong family unit with fathers at home to set a good example for young men. Why are mass shootings always young men?

    5. Handwritten letters

    6. Anticipation

So much "instant gratification" these days. I miss the feeling of anticipation. Who will be on the other end of a ringing land line? How many lovely Christmas cards will I receive this year with hand written newsy notes? That used to happen. I could go on and on.

    7. Hot roasted cashew nuts in a 10 cent white bag from the local five and dime.

Not to mention homemade limeades from the soda fountain at the local drug store and rootbeer floats!

    8. Being able to board an airplane without going through security.

Going anywhere without having to go through security for that matter. Those were the days.

    9. Uncrowded National Parks and Beaches

Seems places got a little more crowded after we were all locked down for months.

    10. Austin, Texas before so many Californians invaded.

It's lost it's charm. Too crowded, too many homeless, too liberal.
