10 things to do in Yogyakarta

What makes Yogyakarta unique compared to other Indonesian cities is the sultanate and some of the famous ancient temples surrounding it. It's also known as a creative city and home to one of the best Universities in Indonesia (Universitas Gajah Mada).

I'm visiting for a few days here and this is what I think as a must-do here.

1. Hang out at Malioboro at night

Yogyakarta's night life isn't about parties but rather eating and hang out on the street. This is the most famous street to do exactly that.

2. Candi Borobudur

It's one of the grandest Buddhist temple from the 8th century. Unfortunately these days you can't go up the steps because people did too much damage climbing it....

3. Try out local cuisine: Gudeg

It's jackfruit stew (usually quite sweet) with other condiments like chicken / egg and sambal made from cow's skin.

4. Try out local cuisine: pia

This is a sweet snack with traditional green bean filling.

5. Keraton Yogyakarta

(Though honestly I haven't been in the palace ground)

6. Taman Sari

Is a very interesting structure. It used to be some sort of a spa for the king, and currently it has a feel of a rustic charm.

8. Watch cabaret at Raminten’s (or eat at the restaurant)

They have a very interesting and cool mish mash concept of diversity

9. Gereja Ayam

Sadly also I didn't have time to go here either, but this is a very interesting church in a shape of a chicken (should be a bird) on a hilltop.

10. Souvenirs at Pasar Beringharjo

You can get a very good bargain for local crafts here.

11. Bonus: Enam Langit by Plataran

It's very pricey for Yogyakarta's standard but you'll get an amazing view (fingerscrossed for great weather) with great ambience and food.
