4 ways to use your đź‘€eyes to improve your Focus, Motivation, Creative Thinking.
Our eyes are a part of our brain sticking out into the world. The ONLY partâť— Did you know thatâť“ Did you know that our brain state - aroused or calm - is reflected in our eyes? Did you know that by changing our gaze we can change our state? Here are a few tools backed by research! (Always ask for research and my sources when curious to learn more. I demonstrate the tools on my Instagram today @1000yearyoung)
1. FOCUS CLOSE TO SHARPEN FOCUS
The protocol is simple - stare at one spot for 20-30 sec to quite literally sharpen your focus, to focus on one thing, to not mind-wander. One of Andrew Huberman’s favorites! (Podcast episode “FOCUS TOOLKIT” from Dr. Huberman HERE).
2. FOCUS FAR TO GET CREATIVE
When we look far at the horizon a few things happen. We relax our gaze - we relax our mind by focusing on the bigger picture literally and metaphorically. We allow our minds to literally wander which leads to many different thoughts popping up, many different ideas and connections. Abstract thinking gets a boost VS analytical and precise. The combination of these makes us more creative, more adventurous, free from the limitations of the mundane.
3. BIG-PICTURE FOCUS TO REVIVE MOTIVATION FOR THE MUNDANE
When day-to-day errands and to-dos start to feel boring, unimportant, meaningless - connect to the “cathedral” you’re building, remember what’s it all for, see the brush strokes that paint your masterpiece vision. (Read Emily Balcetis’ “Clear Closer Better: how successful people see the world”)
4. NEXT-STEP FOCUS TO REDUCE OVERWHELM FOR LONG-TERM PROJECTS
Are you a big-picture thinker like I am❓ Then I know you get overwhelmed from time to time, “Can I really pull it off?”. To remove this overwhelm and focus effectively on getting the job at hand done - forget about the vision, focus ONLY on the next step, only on the next brick you are laying, only on the next mile you’re finishing. Just like elite marathoners do to win it one step at a time. (Read my blog based on the book by Emily Balcetis - the book summarized. "Goals. Smart is old. Neuroscience-based visual tools to help you ACHIEVE the goals you set.")
What’s your favorite❓ Have you noticed yourself using some of these to switch your focus and mind state to succeed?
