🎙️Becoming an Unforgettable Speaker. 3 things I learned about the Neuroscience of Storytelling.

Preview

I read a book on public speaking by Simon Lancaster "Winning Minds: Secrets From the Language of Leadership" But it isn’t just some book. It’s the book about neuroscience-based public speaking! It’s the book about what makes certain speakers so almost “addictive”. It’s the book about, well, the title says it “winning minds”.

Once you understand the principles of how the best public speeches work - you can improvise and build these principles around any concept, any piece of content, any situation.

Most of us, interested in communication, know that stories are powerful. But why are they❓ Read on to find out!

    1. CREATE CHARACTERS TO BOOST OXYTOCIN AND PRIME LEARNING

When we manage to build the connection between the audience and the hero of our story, be that ourselves or someone, we make the brains in the audience start producing the chemical of bonding, that by the way also opens up the window of neuroplasticity, making us more likely to learn and be changed by the experience, by your talk.

People learn from people they like and trust - oxytocin does both.

A shortcut: make the hero suffer, make us feel the pain, make us empathize - turn on humanity❣️

    2. CREATE DRAMA TO BOOST ADRENALINE AND MAKE IT MEMORABLE

In my previous post we learned that adrenaline makes us remember things better! Now that you bonded the audience with the hero of your story, now it’s time to make us uncomfortable, on edge, worried. Is he/she gonna survive the crisis? - Adrenaline is flowing. We are paying attention. Memories are formed.

    3. CREATE RESOLUTION TO BOOST DOPAMINE AND MAKE IT REWARDING

Nothing like a good end to a great story. It feels pleasurable. It feels rewarding. It feels satisfying. (Think of your favorite movies) And in fact, it’s supposed to! Our brain releases dopamine every time we or people we bond with get out of the crisis, solving the problem, getting the solution. (You may thank mirror neurons for that and our ability to experience things just by observing them) And anything dopamine marks with its appearance we want more of - WE ARE HOOKED, and we'll be back for more!

When our stories have these 3 - we are loved by the audience, they remember us, they come back for more. Master these - and there's nothing impossible for you!
