How could students get more from college?
1. Understand that university is no supposed to be a 'safe space'
Getting educated means that you will be challenged not only intellectually, but also physically, mentally, socially , morally , religiously etc
2. Do not pile up enormous amounts of debt
Take a gap year and work. Work at a job that pays. For you ladies that will probably mean taking on a job that is dirty dangerous and physically demanding
3. Continuing with item 2 , try and develop a side hustle
4. Recognize that the most important thing you will acquire at university will be contacts; namely friends, acquaintances , colleagues, mentors. Socialize accordingly
5. Understand that you are there to get an education. If you discover you don't want that, then re-adjust your life
Looking back on my university days, I am amazed at all the biology students I met that did not want to touch a plant or animal, English students that couldn't write, geography students who couldn't read a map, psychology students who didn't understand people, sociology students who did not like people, history students that never visited any of the local museums or historic sites etc. etc.
6. Recognize, that most liberal arts degrees will not provide you with job specific tools. A college degree is your entree ** socially ** into the middle class. Its up to you to make your life happen
7. Your university will have a fully equipped athletic facility. Use it to develop athletic skills that will benefit you further in life.
Learn to swim. Learn to play 'lifestyle sports'. Develop a fitness regime for your life
8. Learn to apply yourself to your studies. If you lack scholarship skills, have a college tutor mentor you in these skills sooner rather than later.
9. There are all sorts of activity clubs and organizations
Pick one that might give you marketable skills such as -working on the school newspaper, the school radio station. the computer club. Pick another activity that will make you stretch and grow, like skydiving (aak !)
