How many moves can a chess player see ahead?

Many people ask me this. But the answer is: sometimes not even one!

I've seen many strong players not be able to solve this puzzle:

WHITE TO MOVE AND MATE IN ONE MOVE!

All you need to do is see one move ahead from this position. Can you move and mate with the white pieces.

Is it the white rook to the left then Black king with no escape? There for an idiot!

the black bishop could go in between the rook and the king so no mate in one

@JamesAltucher By the way, I feel like this is really more like playing Sudoku than Chess. Ha ha. After playing this puzzle, I had an idea last night of creating a version of Sudoku that uses Chess pieces instead of numbers.
