Ways to handle criticism

My take on a list by @lovingkindnesscomedy

    1. Don't react

    0

Once you react, especially if you are upset, you've tipped your hand and you've lost any potential advantage that might have been available. There's value in not letting the person criticizing you know how you feel.

    2. Does their opinion matter?

    0

There's very few people whose opinion matters or should matter. It's a powerful skill to weed out and disregard the opinions that don't matter.

    3. Are they right?

    0

Regardless of whether you like them or generally value their opinion, are they right? None of us are perfect so then some criticism will be correct whether we like it or not.

    4. If they are right, what are you going to do?

    0

You could still ignore them. You could try to work on the issue without telling them or thanking them. You could thank them, tell them you're going to work on it and depending on who they are, ask them for help on how to improve.

I have something called "the 24 hour rule". This works for whenever there is some sort of public outrage on an article i write:

If I don't respond to anyone for 24 hours, the outrage is over. If I respond, then I have to reset the clock and it's another 24 hours of trolls hating on me.

Another thing I always response is that every time I respond to a troll, I lend my entire social media platform to them so they can take advantage of the large numbers of followers now giving them attention. Don't do it.

The other thing to consider is whether the criticism is meant to help improve a situation or not.
