Don't try to convince, try to understand...

"We've always done it this way"

Anyone who has tried to change something has run into this phrase.

The first reflex.

"but what if, listen" followed by all the benefits of change.

It often leads to nothing. Oh no sorry. It almost always leads to frustration.

On both sides, the one who wants to change and the one who doesn't.

By trying to convince people, you are attacking the surface of the problem.

But the blockage doesn't come from there. It comes from beliefs.

Don't blame anyone. We have plenty.

They develop every day based on our experience and interpretation of life.

And often they are "never" challenged.

That's where you can step in.

    1. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood— Stephen Covey

Don't try to convince, try to understand and offer the person the opportunity to re-evaluate this belief. "We've always done it this way"

    • When did you start doing it this way?
    • What were your reasons for choosing this option?
    • What other options were on the table at that time?
    • What has changed in our environment since then?

    2. If the person understands from the inside, they can become your best ally in change.

Not because you have convinced them, but because they have shifted a belief.

    3. They will have gone from "we've always done it this way" to "I have lots of other ideas to improve the situation".

    4. Understanding and giving the other person the opportunity to create other options is the greatest gift you can give.
